I'm so excited to dive into the pope's encyclical. I just finished printing it out because there's no way I'll be able to read it well on a screen.

Two things about IO that stood out to me other than the Gemini blitzkrieg. 1 they're trying glasses (again!). I feel like Google has carried cultural trauma from the initial glassholes fiasco and I don't think this will fare better. I showed my HS kids the demo and they were alarmed - who's the target demo here?! 2 Demis playing Steve Jobs 'one more thing' trick by hyping the singularity at the end. Just stop bro, you're scaring the shit outta people ...

Do you remember Robert Scoble wearing Google Glass in the shower? How do your kids feel about Meta’s glasses? Does form factor or the company change their opinion? Maybe usecase since the Meta glasses are designed for things like WhatsApp and Instagram. Does that make them any friendlier to these types of glasses?

Scoble! ha hadn't thought of that guy for awhile. I sure remember him if I don't remember that particular Google Glass moment.

The Meta glasses have some cred with the kids; we talked about them briefly when I was covering the rise of social. But we didn't get deep into it. The one thing they asked about Google's was price point - they are very sensitive to price and privacy (surprisingly).

Oh yeah! I forgot you actually worked at Microsoft. Do you know him personally or have you met him? What’s your take? I only know him from his punditry and his role as quasi-ambassador at MSFT. Here’s the article about him taking a shower while wearing Google Glass: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/jwherrman/yes-you-can-wear-google-glass-in-the-shower

You might want to help your students realize that Meta is probably even more predatory than Google when it comes to privacy stuff. Neither of them are saints, but Google might abuse your data through incompetence. Meta does it with calculated intent.

Haha they viscerally feel my disgust with Meta and distrust of all consumer facing big tech esp socials.

Is funny - a piece I wrote a few weeks ago based on a lecture I put together for them about the rise of AI (and hopefully the sink of social) has gone substack-viral (at least for me after 3yrs writing here, approaching 2k views)

That’s fantastic. You deserve it. Congratulations! What’s the title of the piece?
